Family visiting Newport helps fix vandalized memorial bench

The Newport Police Department shared a family’s act of kindness on Monday.

Police said Longview Police Officer Kevin Sawyer and his family were visiting Newport on vacation, when they noticed one of the memorial benches had been vandalized with graffiti.

So, Sawyer and his family decided to buy painting supplies and fix it up.

“It may not be perfect, but the lessons learned and memories made on this vacation will last a lifetime,” said Jaimie Sawyer.

Retired Newport Officer Steve Etter made the bench in honor of Oregon State Police Senior Trooper James Hatch, who was well known on the Bayfront and among the fishing community, police said.

After he retired, he contracted cancer within a few months and passed away.

In a Facebook post, Newport Police said the city is very fortunate that families like them visit the community.
